During the Fall 2002 semester, AzLitter.org presented a proposal to start an Adopt-A-Campus program at SCC. To date, minimal action has been taken on this proposal; however, today (Wednesday, 29 January 2003) I will be meeting with some students to dicuss what we can do about the litter found on the beautiful SCC Campus.
Things To Do
- Document the litter problem at SCC by touring the campus and taking pictures.
- Contact the group that is responsible for maintaining the campus and inform them that we are forming a group to help keep the campus free of litter.
- Contact campus security to see what concerns they have about us doing what we want to do. [Picking up litter will require us to leave the sidewalks. We will travel "off-road" with respect.]
- Find out if there are any other school related entities that should be contacted.
- Investigate the availability of funds for litter related supplies and equipment.
- Learn about the ASU Clean & Beautiful Program.
- See if the there are Adopt-A-Street programs sponsered by the City of the Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Isolate those areas of campus that have a litter problem.
- Replace cigarette bins and garbage cans with combination units. At a minimum, place Butts Only signs at each cigarette bin.
- Place "Artie Artichoke Thanks You for Not Littering" signs on all inside and outside bulletin-boards (this includes classrooms)
- Supply cleaning personal with litter pickers. [Cleaning personal have carts that they move from room-to-room. The cart can hold a litter picker and cleaning personal can use the litter picker when they encounter outside litter.]
- Hold a contest for an Artie Artichoke Litter Patrol motto. [Can we use a modified Smokey Bear motto? Only YOU can prevent Litter.]
- Create litter-related images of Artie Artichoke.
- Include an AALP sign-up sheet like those provided for other school related clubs and organizations.
