On Thursday, 24 October 2002, I was entering the parking lot at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) and located on the island that separates Chaparral Road was a political sign belonging to Craig Columbus. I've worked at SCC for six years and this island has always been free of political signs. I suspected the political sign was illegally placed; therefore, I called the Salt River Pima Police. The dispatcher took my contact information and indicated that an officer would call me. I was at SCC to speak to the Student Life and Leadership organization about starting an Adopt-A-Campus Litter Patrol and I didn't have time to wait for a return call. Upon going to the Student Center for my meeting, I learned that a political debate between Columbus, Haywood and Severis was getting ready to start. Now I understood why there was political sign located on Chaparral.
I searched out a member of the Columbus campaign and informed them that I had called the Salt River Pima Police about their political signs (there were two) located on Chaparral. I told them there was chance they were illegally placed and I wanted the police to decide. The guy told me he would send somebody out to take them down. I said Thanks.
Immediately after the debate ended, I walked out to Chaparral to see if the political signs were gone and found them still standing. I returned to the Student Center, relocated the guy I had spoken to, and Thanked him for lying to me.
Here is the political sign.
