During mid-March of 2003, USLitter.org did three litter pick-ups in the southwest deserts of California.
The first litter pick-up was at the Tamarisk Shoe Tree, which has still has a Litter Alert issued against it.
The second litter pick-up occurred at the corner of 29 Palms Hwy and 49 Palms Ave in Twentynine Palms.
The third litter pick-up was in the parking lot for a Motel Six in Twentynine Palms. The litter was a result of emptying a garbage container.
A road sign along the road to Mecca, California said Litter is Obscence, Keep Your Desert Clean.
In California the cost of littering is $1,000 (versus $500 in Arizona).
